Reginald William Gammon
Reg Gammon was a freelance illustrator and writer who hailed from the village of Petersfield in Hampshire. Thanks to the typically wet weather on a painting trip in Ireland when he was well into his 60s, he discovered the joys of oil painting in desperation after his watercolours were repeatedly washed away by the heavy showers. Recognition outside his circle of friends and admirers came very late in life when he held his first London one-man show aged 92, at the New Grafton Gallery before a 100th birthday retrospective at the RWA. He lived to 103 years of age and the prolific flow and high standard of his work continued to the end. www.whytes.ie
