James Barry
James Barry was born in Cork, one of the most important Irish Neoclassical and early Romantic painters. After the completion of his renowned cycle of paintings, The Progress of Human Culture, for the great room of the Society of Arts, London, Barry sought to make a number of changes to the sixth and final scene, Elysium and Tartarus, or the State of Final Retribution. He did so by means of three engravings, each depicting a detail of Elysium. Barry had a profound influence on William Blake.
