  • Brian King was born in Dublin in 1942 and studied in the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. He later lectured at the college and in 1984 assumed the position of Head of the Department of Sculpture, a role he held until 2004. From 1964 to 1978 he participated in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, serving as its President for the last ten years. He won the Carroll’s Award 1965. In 1969 and 1983 he represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale, on the earlier occasion becoming the first Irish artist to win the major individual prize. He has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and abroad and has secured several sizeable commissions for public sculpture including the National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in Service now sited in Merrion Square, Dublin. He is an member of Aosdána and his work is held in public collections including The Hugh Lane Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin, Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork, RTE, Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank, University of Ulster and University College, Dublin, among others.We are grateful to the artist for his assistance in cataloguing this work.

  • Good Samaritan Lutheran Church (est. 1917) served the large German immigrant population living on Blackwell's Island, later known as Welfare Island (from 1921 when it was used principally for hospitals) and ultimately Roosevelt Island from 1973. By the 1950s, most of the island's institutions had relocated or closed among them the Good Samaritan Lutheran church which was abandoned and ultimately demolished.

  • John Mansfield Crealock was born in Dublin John North Crealock and Marion Lloyd Crealock. He was educated at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Surrey and after serving for the British army he travelled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian from 1901-4. In England he showed with the RA from 1908 as well as the Goupil Gallery, New England Art Club and with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters to which he was elected a member in 1918. He exhibited with the RHA, Dublin, between 1910 and 1917, with addresses recorded in Chelsea, London. Although the title of the present work is unknown, Crealock adopted James Abbott McNeill Whistler's (1834-1903) method of titling his portraits of elegant women in lavish interior settings according to their colour arrangement as opposed to the names of the sitters, for example 'The Yellow Sofa' shown at the RHA exhibition 1914, catalogue no. 94.

  • An artist by the name of T. Lalor exhibited at the Oireachtas art exhibitions throughout the 1940s and once - in 1943 - at the RHA from an address in Carlingford Road, Drumcondra. It is believed this may be the artist Tom Lalor whose watercolour caricatures of Dublin personalities, dating to 1917-1919, are in the collection of the National Library of Ireland. Lalor was a commercial artist who between 1912 and 1923 supplied a weekly half-page cartoon to D.P. Moran's Leader. He was also involved in poster campaigns for the Irish Independent in the early 1930s. Whyte's offered a cartoon dating from circa 1920 on 16 April 2011 as lot 273.
