FIVE WOMEN, 1983
Markey Robinson (1918-1999)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 11 December 2011 / 28

Reserve: €1500

  • Signature: signed lower left
  • Medium: oil with gouache on board
  • Dimensions: 37 by 57cm., 14.7 5 by 22.5in.
  • Provenance: Provenance:George Gallery, Dublin; Private collection
  • Exhibited: Exhibited:Apollo Gallery, Blackrock, Co. Dublin (mid 1980s)
  • Literature: Literature:Stairs, Susan, Markey Robinson - A Life in Retrospective, Shorthall-Stairs Publications Dublin, 1998, p.45, catalogue no. 59 (listed and illustrated).
  • Stairs q.v., writes: "Compositionally, this is similar to Gauguin's Ta Matete 1892, but, in Five Women, Markey has said - "they're in different positions". Gauguin's painting features five women seated on a bench (also one standing). In fact, the only figure whose head is turned in a different direction is the second figure from the right who faces to the right in Ta Matete and straight on in Five Women. Markey's piece is tighter, more compact, with a spartan background of muted grey. Each figure is composed of a few simple shapes of pure colour - the whole structure consists of solid areas of form linked together in the manner of a jigsaw."

  • Signature: signed lower left
  • Medium: gouache on board
  • Dimensions: 51 by 29cm., 20 by 11.5in.

  • Literature: Literature:Stairs, Susan, Markey Robinson - A Life in Retrospective, Shorthall-Stairs Publications Dublin, 1998, p.16, catalogue no. 4 (listed and illustrated)
  • Stairs notes: "The angle from which we view this group of objects is unusual in that we appear to be looking down, rather than across at them. Objects are faceted, which suggests an influence of Cubism - but more so of its pictorial qualities rather than its theoretical objectives. The sole use of blue, both in the delineation and modelling of forms, accords a great sense of solidity, a denseness which links all the forms together."

  • Patsy Dan Rodgers, King of Tory, was one of the original members of the Tory Island Primitive School of Art, whose patron was the renowned artist Derek Hill. Patsy Dan, along with fellow artists, Anton Meenan, James Dixon and his brother, Ruarí Rodgers first brought their art from the isolated Gaeltacht area that is Tory Island into the public mainland domain when they held their inaugural collective exhibition at the New Gallery, Belfast in 1968. During these formative years, Rodgers was an instrumental campaigner against Government plans to relocate the inhabitants of Tory to the Donegal mainland following the 1974 storms which left those on Tory Island cut off for nearly two months. Owing to this, as well as his artistic and cultural contributions to the island, he has since been granted the title of King of Tory. In October 2003 the University of Ulster Art Gallery, Belfast paid homage to the naive style of this collective of artists in a group exhibition of Tory Islander art. Patsy Dan continues to produce to date and has had recent exhibitions in the Cristeph Gallery, Letterkenny, County Donegal. An exhibition of Tory Island paintings was most recently organised by the artist Ian Fleming in the Engine Room Gallery in Belfast in February 2011.
