  • Dimensions: 38 by 29cm., 15 by 11.5in.
  • A naval oak, rum and tobacco cupboard inscribed with the family crest and motto "valet anchora virtus" of Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner, Lord of Uttoxeter and Admiral of the Grand Fleet off Ireland. Well respected as one of the Royal Navy's most dashing frigate captains and later as a senior admiral. He began his career at the Battle of Quiberon Bay in 1759 during the Seven Years' War, while much of his later service was spent on American and West Indian stations. In 1778 whilst in command of the 'Maidstone' at Grenada he captured a large and heavily armed French ship and he also commanded the 'Sultan' at The Battle of Grenada in 1779 and the 'Duke' at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782, during the American War of Independence. Gardner was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the coast of Ireland in 1800 and of the Channel fleet in 1807.

1876 (22 April) letter written by Sir Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh MP, a remarkable man, born without arms or legs.

  • The letter to Thomas Jameson, on parliamentary business mentions "Sir M Beach and Mr Plunket". Also included is a letter concerning Clerks of the Crown and a printed statement pertaining to a proposed bill in which Kavanagh played a part. (3 items including Born Without Limbs - A Biography of Achievement by Kenneth Kavanagh, 1989). Born without arms and legs Arthur McMurrough Kavanagh led a life full to the extent of disbelief. He became a proficient horseman, learned to fish and shoot, all by adapting his stumps, and was extremely well educated and travelled, having completed grand tours of Europe and Asia in his early 20s. He married in 1855, to his cousin Frances Mary Forde-Leathley, fathered 6 children, and was elected an MP to Westminster in 1886. He died in 1889.

  • Outlines in great details the terms and conditions by which certain assets are to be distributed during the lives of Brabazon & Richards and afterwards. John Arthur Henry Moore assumed the additional name of Brabazon by License in 1866. He was the father of John Cuthbert Brabazon Moore, an aviation pioneer and Conservative politician, who in turn was a descendant of the 7th Earl of Meath. The title Baron Brabazon of Tara was created for John Cuthbert Moore Brabazon in 1942. Members of the Brabazon family have been Earls of Meath since 1580, when William Brabazon became the first Earl of Meath. Today, John Anthony Brabazon is the 15th Earl of Meath. His heir apparent is his only son Anthony Jacques Brabazon (who has the title Lord Ardee), who was born in 1977. Enclosed with the document is a letter dated May 1931 signed by C. Moore Brabazon, with an address at Tara Hall, Navan, County Meath
