Hughie O'Donoghue (b.1953)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 14 March 2011 / 51

Reserve: €8000

  • Signature: signed lower right; signed, inscribed [Prodigal Son Series] titled and dated on reverse
  • Medium: oil and gampi tissue on panel with photographic component
  • Dimensions: 74 by 64cm., 29 by 25in.
  • In spring of 2005 the Fenton Gallery, Cork hosted Hughie O’Donoghue’s solo show, ‘Parable of The Prodigal Son’. The exhibition traced the fable through a series of narrative panels of which this is one. The story told by the artist was inspired by a set of plate negatives bought at a car-boot sale. These photographs of unknown people fused with the artist’s own imagined ideas of their lives, memories of his father and grandfather and ‘the muddy wastes of the Western Front’ fuse to form a collection of contemplative multifaceted visual meditations. The artist describes his creative processes for these panels as, “…a balance between action and contemplation, the old alchemical division between laboratory and library, only in my case the laboratory is a painting studio.”

  • Provenance: Provenance:Green on Red Gallery, Dublin; Private collection
  • Exhibited: Exhibited: 'Art Chicago 1999', Green on Red Gallery, Chicago, USA (loaned)
  • This work may also have been exhibited at ‘Theatre-Bunker-Archive-Reception Area’ the artist’s solo show at the Green On Red Gallery, Dublin in 1999. This exhibition presented the viewer with a series of banal and impenetrable environments which Byrne choose to leave unexplained to his audience. All the works were made in New York where the artist was living in 1999 and were shot at night from the outdoors looking inside on spaces which were unfamiliar and out of the control of the artist. The spaces depicted by Byrne hold only hints at the function of the corporate environment giving the viewer a sense of remote isolation akin to the artist's during the creation process.

  • Paulino Uzcudun Eizmendi (1899-1985) was a Spanish heavyweight boxer known as the 'Basque Woodchopper'. Uzcudun was European heavyweight champion who fought Joe Louis, Max Baer and Primo Carnera among others during his career. Uzcudun came out of retirement on 13 December 1935 to fight Joe Louis, however he was defeated in the fourth round (this is referred to on the reverse of the board). From August to October 1975 Campbell held a exhibition entitled ‘Friends and Acquaintances’ at the Tom Caldwell Gallery, Upper Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin. Culled from thirty years of work, the exhibition included images of contemporaries such as Dillon, Brendan Behan and Paddy Maloney of the Chieftains as well as several Spaniards and personalities from the circus and the boxing ring. It is likely that this work was also included in this show.

Campbell’s connection with Spain was first formally recognised in 1978 when he was made a Commander of the Order of Merito Civile. Although approaches had been made previous to this, until the fall of the Franco regime, Campbell had respectfully declined to accept an accolade from the Spanish government.

Some studies were reference material for later works in oil. Others simply demonstrated the artist’s deft use of the wet-in-wet technique where by paint is applied to damp paper which results in the colours blending into each other. These atmospheric works were generally rapidly painted. Artist’s archive no. 194

  • Michael George Brennan, subject and landscape painter, was born and educated in Castlebar Co. Mayo where his talents were noted by Charles O’Donal, afterwards a police magistrate in Dublin (Strickland, p.83). Aged fifteen he was sent to the Dublin Society’s School and later the Royal Hibernian Academy where his skills where honed. He later travelled to London, working on several publications there, including Fun, a rival to Punch. Ill health in the form of typhoid fever led Brennan back to Ireland and later prompted a further relocation to the warmer climes of Italy. Settling first in Rome, Brennan continued to send back paintings for exhibition in the Royal Academy between the years 1865-1878. Strickland describes how his works were “warmly praised as admirably painted, harmonious in colour, and full of character and feeling.” Brennan’s deteriorating condition provoked later trips to Capri and it was here that he came in contact with the subject of this work, Miss Laura Catherine Redden a celebrated deaf American poet, journalist and author. The pair were engaged within ten days of meeting and while they discussed their future wedding plans the engagement was ultimately broken off, the reasons for which are unknown. One rumoured explanation was that Redden was not willing to forego her flourishing career. Brennan died from a fall in 1871.

Laura Catherine Redden (1839-1923) was born in Maryland in the United States. Having lost her hearing at the age eleven she enrolled in the Missouri School for the Deaf (MSD) and later developed the skill of sign language and the American Manual Alphabet. Upon graduation in 1859 Redden was unable to enrol in college because of her disability; thus to supplement her education she travelled to Europe between 1865-1896 where she studied several languages. When she met Brennan she was already a published writer with articles in Harper’s Magazine and American Annals of the Deaf where she championed the struggles of the deaf community. Earlier in 1860, she became the editorialist for the St. Louis Republican and officially adopted the pseudonym Howard Glyndon. In 1861, she was sent by the St. Louis Republican to Washington D.C. report on the American Civil War. She was a pro-Union loyalist and wrote poems about the experiences and human interests of the battle field. Redden also wrote to Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant during the war period and it was with this wealth of experience that she later travelled to Europe between 1865-1869 to become a correspondent for The New York Times.

After the engagement to Brennan was called off Redded returned to America and in 1876 married Edward Whelan Searing, a lawyer, with whom she had one child. By 1870, she returned to New York and Boston and was a staff writer for the New York Evening Mail and contributed to Galaxy, Harper's Magazine, and the Tribune. The marriage did not last and they divorced in 1894. Laura Redden Searing died in 1923 and was buried in Colma, California. She is remembered as a pioneer within the deaf community and is pictured here as a sensual muse of a former lover in the prime of her life.
