SILICON SUITE I, THE PLOUGH AND THE STARS, 1986
Robert Ballagh (b.1943)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 13 December 2010 / 15

Reserve: €300

  • Medium: silkscreen and etching on copper plate (no. 44 from an edition of 286)

  • Titles of works: The Plough and the Stars, The Global Embrace and The Ambidextrous Paradigm. James Gorry, in the exhibition catalogue for `Robert Ballagh - Works from the Studio 1959-2006', describes these pieces as, “…a threefold meditation on the potentially destructive imbalance in Western Culture between science and creativity but also a reflection on Ireland's contribution to Technology and Art. The Ambidextrous Paradigm (Suite III), whose somewhat tongue-in-cheek title alludes to the so called opposition of functions in the left and right of the human brain, ingeniously and provocatively juxtaposes images such as Einstein's Head, a music sheet by Bach and a nuclear mushroom cloud seen at the end of a series of classical, Piranesian arches.”

They rise in a dramatic almost vertical shape from the river’s edge and are the most distinctive geological feature visible from New York City. Landscape was always an integral part of Brady’s oeuvre although in his later years the prevalence of still life overshadowed this genre. Brady was born and raised in the Washington Heights area of Manhattan and studied at Art Student’s League, NYC. He was well received in solo exhibitions in his native city at the Babcock Galleries on Madison Avenue in the 1960s before relocating to Ireland. His first solo show in Dublin was held in the Molesworth Gallery in 1964 and comprised mostly Irish landscapes.

In a monograph on the artist published in 2002, Ciarán Carty linked Keating’s still life paintings with those of the 17th century Dutch and Flemish painters, whose allegorical works spoke of the transience of material objects and earthly delights. So too, according to Carty, Keating’s works are “...a metaphor for the cyclical nature of life and death...” a glimpsed moment of ripeness and perfection prior to decay.
