  • William John Leech met the Botterell family in London in 1919, at the end of the First World War, on his return from painting in France and the Botterell family’s return from Holland. Percy Botterell,, an eminent London lawyer had been a commercial attaché to The Hague during the war, and through his wife May, they had met Leech’s older brother, Cecil. Cecil Leech had fought in the First World War, as a commissioned officer in the Royal Horse Artillery. He had spent four years in a prisoner of war camp and as a released prisoner met May Botterell in Holland, where she had organised a relief centre for released prisoners, providing clothes, money and information to aid prisoners on their return home. It was Cecil Leech who, on his return to London, organised the meeting between the Botterell family and the Leech family and it was Percy Botterell who commissioned W. J. Leech to paint portraits of himself, his wife, May and his three children, James, Guy and Suzanne. This meeting and the painting of May’s portrait was to change the Botterell family life irrevocably and was to begin the lifelong relationship between May Botterell and W. J. Leech, which culminated in their wedding in 1953, after the deaths of Percy Botterell in 1951 and Leech’s wife Elizabeth, in 1950. Dr Denise Ferran FIGURATIVE

J. James Botterell was the eldest of the Botterell’s three children and he had remained at school in Winchester, England during the war years. Contemporary photographs show James (Jim) Botterell at Clayesmore School, Winchester, where he excelled at athletics and played the saxophone in the school’s band. Leech painted this portrait of him, c.1923, when he was a boarder at Winchester. A contemporary photograph of Jim1, taken at his mother’s apartment at 24 Hamilton Terrace, London, after she had moved out from the family home at Coombe-Edge, Hampstead, shows Jim as a tall, handsome young man, similar to the image captured by Leech in this portrait. As an artist, Leech had the ability to catch the likeness of his sitter as was the case in his portrait of Chloe Abbott in 1965, forty-three years later. Leech captures Jim, wiser beyond his years, resembling his father, in the shape of his head, the strength of his nose and forehead and the parting of his thick hair. He felt the break-up of his happy family home, very deeply, retaining a deep respect and love for his father and a love for his mother, a mood conveyed in this portrait. In conversation in the 1980s he recalled how vividly he remembered his mother’s visit to Winchester, when he was seventeen, to tell him of her new love affair and her intention to move out of the family home to Hamilton Terrace to be close to Leech’s studio in Hamilton Mews. However, May and Percy Botterell maintained a cordial relationship and family time was spent during the holidays at their large family home in Hampstead and later in the Botterell home in Burley in the New Forest, when Percy Botterell moved out of London. After his father’s death, Jim and his wife Eileen, still continued to entertain the couple at Burley for long visits, especially during May’s later illnesses. Dr Denise Ferran FIGURATIVE

  • In its original Combridge Gallery black frame, circa 1925-35. This was formerly thought to be a view of Clare Island from Achill (Kennedy 2007, p.230), but now, with a larger image than was available in the past, the view is almost certainly of Moyteoge and Achill Head, seen from the Keel to Dooagh road. Certainly the twin peaks to the left and the profile of the mountains are similar to those in Henry's Paysage Sinistre, 1914-15 (Kennedy, number 406), which also depicts the scene, and the accompanying photograph which was taken from further south at Killeenabausty on Achill's Atlantic Drive. The predominating mountain must therefore be Croaghaun and the barely indicated stretch of beach to the right, where the high ground meets the sea, is Keem Strand. West of Ireland Landscpape is dated 1925-35 on stylistic grounds and the strong colours and moderate impasto of the paint in the foreground are typical of Henry's work at that time. Time and again Henry made paintings in his studio from sketches done much earlier. He often, too, painted variations on a theme. A characteristic of his output from about 1916-18 onwards, as in this picture, is an absence of people as he grew more interested in the landscape per se. And yet his ubiquitous cottages and turf stacks evoke a redolence of humanity and of our relationship to the very ground that supports us. Again, as here, Henry's compositions often have a sense of timelessness which lends a gentle feeling of monumentality to his work. Dr S. B. Kennedy LANDSCAPE

  • Cook Street in the vicinity of Christ Church Cathedral, houses a rather imposing stretch of medieval town wall. Although much restored in recent years, it marks the line of the original Hiberno-Norse wall, which was first built c.1100 (according to archaeological dating) not far from the banks of the River Liffey at high tide. Cook Street is so named as during the thirteenth century, the time of Anglo-Norman settlement, cooks (the medieval equivalent of fast-food traders), were placed outside the town wall in order to minimise the danger of fire. Most buildings at this time were made of timber and so at great risk. A number of gateways were cut through the wall to give access to the new quarter. Of these, the sole survivor is St Audeon’s Arch, seen here as it appeared in 1934. FIGURATIVE

  • Derrig was born on 26 November 1897, in County Mayo. He was educated locally and at University College Galway. During his time in college he organised a corps of the Irish Volunteers. After the 1916 Easter Rising he was arrested and imprisoned. After his release he graduated from college and became headmaster in a technical college in Mayo. During the Irish War of Independence Derrig was interned at the Curragh Camp. While there he was elected a Sinn Féin Teachta Dála (TD) for Mayo North and West. His comrade in arms, Maurice MacGonigal, was interned in Ballykinlar Camp. Derrig took the republican side during the Irish Civil War. He was later captured by the Irish Free State army. While in custody of the Criminal Investigation Department he was severely injured, having an eye shot out by CID detectives. At the June 1927 general election he was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow–Kilkenny. In Éamon de Valera's first government in 1932 O Deirg was appointed Minister for Education. From 1939 to 1943 he served as Minister for Lands. He was re-appointed to Education in 1943 until 1948. Between 1951 and 1954 he became Minister for Lands again. He died on 19 November 1956. • Framed in pitch pine recycled from the pews of Burnfoot Presbyterian Church, Co. Donegal. The earliest documented tapestry of Dillon's is the large work titled Gentle Breeze, now in the collection of Bord Fáilte. Gentle Breeze was begun in 1950 and exhibited three years later at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art (no. 61), where it was widely recognised as the outstanding entry in that year's show. James White discusses the piece at some length in his monograph on Dillon, drawing attention in particular to the element of painstaking manual labour involved in such a project: "Most modern painters and tapestry designers send their cartoons to the great tapestry factories to be woven there, but Gerard started his own in Roundstone, at a time when he ran out of painting materials and perhaps adequate cash; obtaining a large canvas base and able to acquire wool ends in different colours locally, he set out to master the handcraft practised in cottages around the world for many hundreds of years" (James White, Gerard Dillon: An Illustrated Biography, Wolfhound Press, 1994, page 61). Dillon evidently enjoyed the work, for he is known to have executed at least two other tapestries: Island Tapestry (IELA, 1953, no. 9) and the present work, Hands Across the Border. In subject and composition Hands Across the Border is typical of Dillon's consummate creativity; the flattened shapes of the two figures at once intertwine and flare outwards in a decorative design redolent of folk art. White considered the work to "represent Dillon's feeling for his country, a man born and brought up in Ulster yet totally at home in the West of Ireland". FIGURATIVE
