  • Possibly a scene on the Atlantic Drive, Achill Island, although of this one cannot be certain. The heavy impasto employed in the foreground and in the clouds is relatively uncommon in Paul Henry’s oeuvre, although the evenly applied paint on the rest of the painting is typical of his work. Again, characteristic of Henry, the composition was almost certainly based on sketches made earlier. Dated to the 1940s on stylistic grounds, Landscape, Connemara is numbered 1290 in S. B. Kennedy’s ongoing cataloguing of Paul Henry’s work.Dr. S. B. KennedyJanuary, 2015

  • In spring 2013 May Guinness formed part of an important and exciting exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art titled Analysing Cubism. It highlighted the strong association between Irish female artists, Cubism and the promotion of Modernist Art in Ireland. The present work, Still Life, reflects Guinness' avant-garde style and demonstrates her radical reimaging of composition, form and colour in this genre.Among Guinness' contemporaries exhibited in IMMA were Mainie Jellett, Mary Swanzy, Evie Hone and Norah McGuinness alongside their continental counterparts Pablo Picasso, George Braque, Albert Gleizes and André Lhote. It was in the company of Hone and Jellett that Guinness travelled to France to study under Lhote from 1922 to 1925. May Guinness first travelled to Paris in 1910 and, at the outbreak of World War I, she relocated there to become a military nurse in the French armed forces. She exhibited regularly in Dublin throughout her career. Venues included the RHA, IELA and the Dublin Painters Group. A memorial retrospective was held the year after her death in 1955 at the Dawson Gallery.

  • Provenance: Taylor Gallery, Dublin;Private collection
  • Exhibited: Taylor Gallery, Dublin, 26 October to 6 November 1982, catalogue no. 30
  • The composition and colour of the present example are immediate and striking and contrast greatly with Swanzy’s gentle rhythmic landscapes of her earlier Cubist phase. From the 1930s and 40s her work changed direction dramatically and she became more concerned with mood, symbolism and the war ravaged world around her. Here the fantastic and almost grotesque characters demand the viewer’s attention be drawn into the scene. The crowd in the middle ground give a sense of intensity to the work as they surge towards a point beyond view to the left of the canvas.

He held a joint exhibition with fellow Belfast artist Gerard Dillon in 1943 at the Contemporary Painter Gallery and later with Victor Waddington in 1946. The positive response and sales of his work garnered him a contract with Waddington and allowed him to paint full time. Collaborative shows with George Campbell, Neville Johnson and Gerard Dillon followed. The present example dates to this early phase in the artist’s career. The year after this work was painted O’Neill travelled to Paris and his subject and style developed further. It is thought that this portrait was painted at Bryansford, Co. Down.
