  • Rare pair of 12 bore percussion cap pistols by Joseph Egg. Barrels engraved with maker's name "Egg No 1 Piccadilly London". Hammer and trigger guards with fine engraved decoration. Lock plates also decorated, stepped and rounded both ends, and engraved "Joseph Egg by permission of Forsyth the patentee". White metal foresight, Full walnut stocks with chequered butts and vacant escutcheon. Complete with original ramrods. Contained in a later (circa 1840) brass fitted case. These pistols are illustrated in Clay P. Bedford's book Early Firearms of Great Britain and Ireland (page 159-160). As inscribed on the lock-plates permission was granted by Alexander John Forsyth, inventor of the percussion ignition, to a select number of gunsmiths for the very early manufacture of the first percussion lock pistols, which include this pair. Collection tags of C.P. Bedford attached to trigger guard.

Signed by both Lord Chief Justice of Ireland Kilwarden, who was attacked and killed along with his nephew during Emmet's 1803 Rebellion and Major Robert Cornwall, justice of the peace, military officer and magistrate of Myshall, Carlow, who oversaw law and order in the area, which included the famous Croppy Road, during the 1798 Rebellion. His role in that Rebellion is recounted in the famous ballad 'The Croppy Boy'.
