  • The location of this work is Mornington, four miles east of Drogheda. It shows the estuary of the River Boyne and the Mountains of Mourne in the background. The bollard located in the far left-hand corner of the work is a navigational device that further identifies the location. Bea Orpen and her husband had a holiday house in Mornington and many childhood years were spent in this part of the county. An oil of the same location entitled, Boats Beached at Mornington by Bea Orpen can be found in the collection of The Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda.

We are grateful to the artist’s family for this additional information.

Orpen relocated from Dublin with her husband C.E.F. Trench in 1942 for The Blue School, Drogheda. It was from this address that she submitted numerous works to the RHA among other exhibitions. In 1980 she was elected an Honorary member of the RHA; just two months later she died in the Cottage Hospital, Drogheda.

This work illustrates the Good Shepherd, flanked on either side by St. Patrick to the right and St. Joseph, to the left. Portobello Barracks, built in 1815 Rathmines, was renamed Cathal Brugha Barracks in 1952. It was the scene of an infamous execution without trial of three men, including pacifist Sheehy Sheffington, in the aftermath of the 1916 rising. It is still a working military barracks today. The windows in the barracks chapel are considered to be among Evie Hone’s first works, executed in the late 1930s
