  • Heavily populated scenes or landscapes are an infrequent occurrence in the larger works of James Humbert Craig. Typically Craig presents a quieter impression of the Irish landscape than is visible here tending to focus more on the natural beauty of the countryside rather than on its inhabitants. Smaller scale works, such as his illustrative work for In Praise of Ulster by Richard Hayward (William Mullan and Son, Belfast, 1938) demonstrate his deft handling of lighter mediums and his ability to effortlessly capture the crowd dynamic, especially in a market scene. A Wee Ulster Fair, depicted on the frontispiece of this text, is testament to his skill

The location of the fair depicted here is unspecified; however, the style of the cottages would suggest its location to be Cushendun, Co. Antrim. In the 19th century the new village was transformed by Ronald McNeill, later Lord Cushendun, who commissioned architect Clough Williams-Ellis to build several distinctive residences. The Cornish style Maud cottages, so called after Lord Cushendun’s wife, were completed in 1925.

  • Born in Belfast MacCana worked initially as a linen and damask designer, before his involvement with the IRA saw him arrested in Co. Cavan in 1921. After serving seven months in prison he was released under the general amnesty, and enrolled at the Belfast College of Art. There he won the Dunville Scholarship, allowing him a further three years study in London at the Royal College of Art. On returning to Ireland he taught for a year in Belfast before being appointed art master at Galway Technical School, 1929-35. From 1935-37 he was an art inspector for the Department of Education in Dublin, before heading to Cork, where he served as principal of the Crawford College of Art, 1937-1967. Shy of publicity, MacCana exhibited only occasionally with the RHA, the Belfast Arts Society and the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers. His work hangs in the Crawford Gallery and University College Cork (see Snoddy, pages 363-364).

  • Provenance: Provenance:
Victor Waddington Galleries, Dublin; Private collection
  • Harry Kernoff had a fondness for the commonplace, the unpolished and the everyday which he communicated truthfully in his urban and rural works scenes alike. Cladach Theampaill Mhuire refers to Priory of St. Mary and 'An Cladach' or the Claddagh in Co. Galway which underwent immense change over a period of 100 years from the 1830s to the 1930s. During the Famine years Claddagh represented the plight of the West and deteriorated rapidly from a once thriving port to rural squalor. By 1927 it was decided the ramshackle domains of the village were unsafe and by the late 1930s all the charm of the haphazard cottages had been demolished. Harry Kernoff was among the artists to pay homage to this hallowed example of Romantic Ireland prior to this change. A carefully observed work, it records the modest characters of the village within an organised composition that is distinctly illustrative in style. The striding figure of the shawled woman in the foreground, the playful activities of the huddled children in the background and even the animals are reminiscent of characters from other works which Kernoff appears to have ‘lift’ and ‘re-cast’ to fit his backdrop. The tranquil village life is given haste by the busy nature of villagers, one of whom is carrying a basket of turf on his back in the middle left-foreground. This perhaps suggests that this work was painted on a Saturday when the turf market took place. The incline of the lane to the left may situate the precise location of this street corner suggesting the location of the priory of ‘St. Mary’s on the Hill’ (Theampaill Mhuire) just beyond the realm of this scene. For another view of this location see lot 45 by Markey Robinson.

CAPE CORNWALL, APRIL 1941
CAPE CORNWALL, APRIL 1941
Medora Heather Bent (1901-1992)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 15 March 2010 / 35

Published Estimate: €600-800

Price Realised:

  • Signature: signed 'M. H. Bent' lower right; with inscription to previous owner exposed on reverse
  • Medium: ink and gouache on buff-coloured card
  • Dimensions: 28 by 37cm., 11 by 14.5in.
  • Inscribed, ‘A present from Cape Cornwall, April 1941, from Alannah’, on reverse. Medora Heather was born in Ireland and spent much of her childhood on the family estate at Errislannan, situated on a remote peninsula in Connemara. Her parents bred race horses and reputedly christened her Medora by randomly choosing a name out of a stud-book (it was either that or 'Cob-web'), but her aunts demanded an Irish name, thus, she was known always as Alannah. Alannah Heather's career as an artist led her to the Slade and London in the 1920s, to St. Ives on her marriage in the 1940s (the period to which this work dates) and Sark in the Channel Islands. During the 1930s she also ventured further a field on artistic excursions to Bruges and Budapest however; she was drawn time and time again back to Connemara, a location which provided her with fertile material for her canvases. Dublin city had a special place in Harry Kernoff’s heart and, like many of his artistic contemporaries; his depictions of the Capital have become invaluable national treasures. In Saint Stephen’s Green he focuses on the historic Fusilier's Arch at the Grafton Street corner of the square. With Joyceian reverence he captures the gentle buzz of a city saturated with familiar characters, many of whom are likely to be diminutive representations of friends and local personalities. Like Joyce’s Ulysses (1922), which mapped out the Capital with the meanderings of Stephen Dedalus, Kernoff’s topographical drawings of the 1900s could equally be effective in the rebuilding of Dublin city. Kindred spirits, and gifted in their respective languages, both artists sought to express the quintessence of Dublin whether it be through the eloquently expressed written word or an unassuming snap-shot. Saint Stephen’s Green was the subject of a number of works by the artist who would more often portray the goings-on inside the Green rather then a bird’s-eye view of the entrance.

  • The Claddagh has a long tradition as an artistic subject having been the source of inspiration for scores of artists dating back to the late 1830s. Both Samuel Lover’s Women of the Claddagh of Galway, 1839, and George Sharpe’s View Of The West Convent, On The Claddagh, Galway, 1844, are examples of hugely significant historical works which depicted a vibrant fishing community of the West prior to the devastation of the Famine. In subsequent years Erskine Nicol, Walter Osborne and John Leech would all gravitate to the ancient village to capture the nostalgic essence of a disappearing Ireland.

  • Campbell’s oeuvre during the period of the Hendriks exhibition is accurately summarised in the exhibition catalogue which observes how the artist’s emotional involvement in his subject matter is crucial to his success as a painter. During the early 1950s Campbell’s focus was on his native Ireland and his second home, Spain and his response to these stimuli. There is a concrete divide between both subject matter and mode of execution between his Irish and Spanish canvases and the catalogue introduction acknowledges the, “…grey, white and green Irish melancholy on one hand, and the darker more colourful drama of the countryside and villages near Malaga on the other.”

For examples of Campbell’s Spanish works see lots 56 and 58.

GYPSY GIRL
GYPSY GIRL
Daniel O'Neill (1920-1974)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 15 March 2010 / 48

Published Estimate: €20000-30000

Price Realised: €20000

  • Medium: oil on board
  • Dimensions: 54 by 36cm., 21.2 5 by 14.2 5in.
  • The period from 1940 to 1950 represented a time of immense productivity for O’Neill and from which he produced some of his strongest work. In the early 1940s Sidney Smith would introduce the artist to fellow Northerner, Gerard Dillon, a formative force within O’Neill’s life and through whom he would become familiar with the works of Rouault, Cézanne, Van Gogh and Picasso.

Gypsy Girl dates to this period and reflects the continental stimuli which must have been impressing upon him. This archetypal female character would be a subject that the artist would revisit several times throughout his career and her iconic presence manifested itself in various guises such as this one or, for example, a Young Actress, c.1945 or Flora, 1954. There is a particularly continental feel to his work which suggests his time spent in Spain. O’Neill hones in on this intriguing figure, dressing the young female in a mantilla which cascades with delicacy from her dark hair down over her shoulders. The elegant lace is given tangible fragility by O’Neill’s expert handling of the paint. The palette is typical of this period, her dark eyes and strong features are softened only by the golds and greens picked up in the girl’s earrings and reflected on her skin and clothes. O’Neill’s romantically inclined temperament lent itself to these charged canvases and, as T.P. Flanagan would later comment, “His romanticism was a delightful balance to the serenity of John Luke’s style and to brilliant but eclectic, dalliance of Colin Middleton”. By the beginning of the 1950s O’Neill would enjoy the culmination of the successes of these evocative works in his highly successful 1952 CEMA Exhibition in Belfast.
