Makiko Nakamura

Auction Date / Lot No.: 28 April 2008 / 15

Price Realised: €4000

  • Signature: signed, inscribed and dated on reverse
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 91 by 91cm., 36 by 36in.
  • Born in Gifu, Japan, Makiko Nakamura studied art in Kyoto and Nagoya. She worked initially in film editing before concentrating on painting. In 1996 she moved to Paris, where she studied print making at Atelier Contre Point and the following year took up a residency at Cite International Des Arts. From 1997-98 she was artist in residence in the fine art department, University of Pennsylvania. In 1999, attracted by the prospect of visiting the home town of Samuel Beckett, whose writings have greatly influenced her work, Nakamura came to Dublin. Since then she has had solo exhibitions at the Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast, Peppercanister Gallery, Dublin and the Ashford Gallery at the RHA, Dublin. Aidan Dunne has written of her work: “The smoky, burnished, metallic surfaces of her paintings bear traces of overall grid patterns and other methodical markings, half there, half already gone. The absolute precision of her method and the sureness of her instinct, plus the sombre presence of her work, mark her out as an artist of exceptional quality”.

Price Realised: €44000

  • Signature: signed, inscribed and dated on reverse
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 213 by 244cm., 84 by 96in.
  • Provenance: Rubicon Gallery, Dublin; Private collection
  • Exhibited: 'Donald Teskey: Tidal Narratives', Limerick City Gallery of Art, 15 September to 15 October 2005
  • Literature: Frank McGuinness, Aidan Dunne and Mike Fitzpatrick, Profile: Donald Teskey, Gandon Editions, Kinsale, 2005, illustrated p. 94
  • Donald Teskey is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary painters, even though he began painting belatedly, having been long established as a graphic artist. His earliest works are virtuoso drawings of desolate city streets, and the fabric of the city, mostly Dublin, remained his central subject matter when he began to apply himself to painting. He is a hard-working perfectionist and the technical flair characteristic of his drawings is also fully evident in his handling of oil paint, which is exceptional and innovative. Never content to settle into a predictable pattern, he has consistently embraced fresh artistic challenges. Just when it seemed that he could safely be classified as an urban artist he ventured out into the wide open spaces, visiting Cape Clear Island off the coast of West Cork and Ballycastle in North Mayo, where he stayed during a fellowship at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation. His urban landscapes had relished the drama of architectonic spaces, the intricate sculptural patterns created by jumbles of buildings, roads, bridges, canals and railways, all defined by the play of light and shadow. As it happened, he found that this pictorial language worked exceptionally well in a completely different, natural environment. Plateau I is one of an extremely ambitious series of paintings and drawings that resulted from his exploration of the elemental Atlantic coastline. Around the village of Ballycastle, the seaward landscape in North Mayo is immense: the vast expanse of the ocean beats relentlessly against terraces of Carboniferous sandstone, exploiting fault-lines and crevices, producing patterns of geometric regularity. The hard-fought battle between sea and land is a drama that unfolds over a geological rather than a human timescale, and this painting and its companions captures the epic nature of the contest. It’s notable that the artist realised that the scale of the subject matter required a corresponding sense of scale in its treatment, so that a great deal of his coastline works are imposingly big. But rather than being big just for the sake of it, their scale is really called for. Donald Teskey is a gestural artist, and the physicality of this painting reflects the process of its making. Though we know its location, it is not specified in the title, perhaps because the work unmistakably captures something of the essence of the West of Ireland. Aidan Dunne April 2008

  • Design for a poster (a copy of which is included with lot) to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, linking that uprising to Ballagh’s perceived continuing struggle for a socialist, 32 county, Irish republic. Ballagh references Delacroix’s iconic neo-classical image: Liberty Leading the People, 1830 (Museé Louvre), which celebrated the deposition of the Bourbon king. Here, however, Liberty holds aloft the Irish rather than the French tricolour, whilst the emblem of the Easter lily appears on the young boy’s satchel, commemorating the 1916 Rising.

ANSWERING
ANSWERING
Daniel O'Neill (1920-1974)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 28 April 2008 / 45

Published Estimate: €50000-70000

Price Realised:

  • Signature: signed lower left
  • Medium: oil on board
  • Dimensions: 51 by 61cm., 20 by 24in.
  • Provenance: Arches Gallery, Belfast; Private collection
  • Ireland's foremost romantic painter, Dan O'Neill was the son a Belfast electrician. He took life classes at the Belfast College of Art and worked for a short period in the studio of fellow Belfast artist Sidney Smith. The advent of his painting career coincided with the outbreak of the Second World War and after the Belfast Blitz in 1941 he took to salvaging wood and experimenting with wood carving. His first exhibition was in 1941 at the Mol Gallery, Belfast. Within five years the Dublin art dealer Victor Waddington had taken him in hand, granting a regular income which allowed him to give up his day-job as an electrician and focus on painting full-time. He visited Paris in 1949, and there absorbed the lessons of Rouault, Vlaminck and Utrillo. In the early 1950s, O’Neill left Belfast with his wife and young child, moving to the village of Conlig, Co. Down. In 1958 he left Ireland for London. His work from this time onwards was increasingly introspective and often desolate. He returned to Belfast in 1971, and died three years later. Answering is a work of brooding romanticism and mystery, typical of O’Neill’s work from the 1940s and early ‘50s. The figures of the woman and man are very similar to those depicted in A Western Family (sold through these rooms, 17 February 2004, lot 44), as is the overall colour scheme and subtle use of chiaroscuro. When reviewing O’Neill and Dillon’s joint show at the Contemporary Pictures Gallery in December 1943, James White noted “the youthfully troubled quality” of some of O’Neill’s works, whilst also remarking on his “beautiful colour sense” and excellent modelling, comments which might be aptly applied to the present work.
