  • The subject of this work derives from the rich imagery of the tales featured in Thomas Kinsella’s translation of the Irish prose epic Táin Bó Cuailgne, the Cattle Raid of Ulster. The women in the Táin were akin to goddess-figures and wielded power throughout the violence, mainly through marriage or motherhood. Ness was the mother of Conchobor, whose father was the druid Cathbad. When her hand was sought in marriage by Fergus MacRoich, who was then King of Ulster, she ensured that her son Conchobor became King of Ulster through her pre-nuptial agreement with Fergus. Immediately she set about Fergus’ dethronement and installed Conchobor as King. His popularity grew until he became a much-loved, wise ruler, famous in battle and renowned for his prowess.
