  • Born in a fishing village on the outskirts of Barcelona, Alvar’s artistic talent was recognised at a young age when he was accepted by the prestigious Escuela Superior de Belle Artes in Barcelona at the age of sixteen. During his study there one of his pictures was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona and he also had his first solo show in 1957. The exhibition was extremely successful leading him to hold exhibitions in many cities throughout Spain. The following year the Instituit Francais awarded him a scholarship to study in Paris where he remained for several years. While there he came into contact with Marc Chagall whose work he greatly admired. During this time he experimented with lithography, the media for which he is best known. In his lithographs he superimposes textures upon images and images upon other images, which gives his work an illusion of translucency. He returned to Spain in 1970 and his work now revolves around capturing life in rural Catalonia. He has exhibited widely throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan.
