  • Chair belongs to a series of works which Sheridan painted in and around 1963 when he first left Dublin, newly married, and settled in New York. There he got a job as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art where, according to Des McAvock, “he never left the rooms containing the Matisses” (Sheridan, op. cit, p. 4). From Matisse he learnt the abstract properties of flat planes and fields of colour. Sheridan described the genesis of his Chairs series thus: “I found the chairs discarded on 21st Street. They seemed cut from a cube, perfect for the shallow picture plane, except the drawing extension arm which would not fit. This was the problem; where to accommodate it? I was also interested in maintaining the content as ‘chair’ but changing the form of representation” (Sheridan, op. cit., p. 25).

  • Literature: George Campbell, 'Approach to Painting: Part 1', Artists International, circa 1960s, p. 83 (see clipping held at the National Irish Visual Arts Library, NCAD, Dublin)
  • A very similar related work, titled Azcelts, was illustrated in Artists International, accompanying an article by Campbell on his painting technique. Commenting on this work, Campbell wrote: “Azcelts is quite a different class of fish. This is my more immediate self having fun the way that playing bongos is fun. It is a lively piece of rhythm I hope and to keep it as lively as possible I used oil bound crayons and inks. Using the coloured crayons I drew in everything other than the blacks or areas of tone. Then with a brush I sloshed on the inks which run off the crayons and fill in the gaps. Here and there I used a knife to scrape off the crayons in order to get down to the paper again - the crayon-stained paper. It has a very brilliant effect. The word Azcelt is just a name I made up from Aztec and Celt since I believe there are great similarities in the two ancient forms of art”.

  • Literature: Reproduced on the front and back covers of International Socialism, issue 51, April-June 1972; Ciaran Carty, Robert Ballagh, Irlandre, Lunds Konsthall, Sweden, 1983, discussed on p. 12 of the catalogue and illustrated on p. 15; Ciaran Carty,
  • Well known for his commitment to Socialist ideals, Ballagh has long been interested in the work of Irish political leader and revolutionary, James Connolly (1868-1916). He first encountered Connolly’s writings in the late 1960s and around this time took to wearing a Connolly badge as evidence of his allegiance. In 1971 he produced the major cruciform portrait, James Connolly. Ciaran Carty describes the work as “a pop icon with four panels showing a silhouette of Connolly, a shattered pane of glass symbolising violent death, the Plough from the Plough and the Stars flag, and a silhouette of the workers riot in Dublin in 1913” (Carty, 1986 op. cit. p. 101). It was one of Ballagh’s last images to use the distinctive pop-art inspired black outlined forms. When first exhibited at the annual Oireachtas exhibition in 1971, An Chomhairle Ealaíon awarded it the Douglas Hyde Gold Medal for the best Irish historical painting. Afterwards, according to Carty, “the Labour Party held it on approval for six months, unable to make up its mind about buying it”. In the event of an impasse, well-known Dublin architect and prominent Fianna Fáil supporter, Sam Stephenson, purchased it from Ballagh’s dealer, David Hendriks, early in 1972. Shortly afterwards, two panels of the portrait were used on the front and back covers of International Socialism, issue 51. This was a special Irish issue in the aftermath of Bloody Sunday in January 1972 in which thirteen demonstrators were shot dead by the British army in Derry. Ballagh subsequently revisited the Connolly portrait at least three occasions. In 1982 he included an image of the bottom panel of the Connolly portrait in Upstairs, No. 3, a depiction of the artist and his wife in their home at Temple Cottages, whilst in 1989 he portrayed himself in conversation with Connolly and Patrick Pearse in The History Lesson. The following year Ballagh reused the black and white pop icon portrait of Connolly as part of a cover design for Kieran Allen’s The Politics of James Connolly (Pluto Press, London, 1990). More recently the image has been used in a booklet to mark the unveiling of the Connolly memorial statue outside Liberty Hall. It has also been appropriated by various political and trade union organisations, from the American Irish Labour Coalition - who have used it on a banner carried in various marches and parades, both in Ireland and America - to the Labour Party of Ireland, who used it in their campaign for the 2004 European elections. (With thanks to the artist for help in cataloguing this work).

CUBIST STILL LIFE WITH VASE, JUG AND PICTURE
CUBIST STILL LIFE WITH VASE, JUG AND PICTURE
Father Jack P. Hanlon (1913-1968)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 21 September 2004 / 49

Published Estimate: €8,000-10,000

Price Realised: €8000

  • Signature: signed lower right
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 46 by 56cm., 18 by 22in.
  • Although undated, this work by Fr. Jack Hanlon, painted in a faceted, Cubist style, is very reminiscent of other works of his from the 1960s. During the last decade of his life he returned occasionally to the style originally introduced to him by Mainie Jellett and André Lhote. His interpretation of Cubism at this time, was, however, a little different to theirs. Cubist Still Life with Vase, Jug and Picture is a tantalising work. At first glance it seems almost abstract - an eye-catching arrangement of brightly coloured shapes. On closer inspection certain objects begin to emerge - on the left a bulbous vase; towards the lower right a strange item with a handle, possibly a jug. Most surprising of all, at the upper right two human figures materialise within a frame! One figure appears to be helping to supporting the other. This may be a detail from one of Fr. Hanlon’s own works or a quotation from a painting owned by him. Fr. Hanlon rarely painted completely abstract works. In his Cubist phase he depicted particular objects by the subtle use of curved lines, as is the case here. His great love for colour and shape is expressed by the juxtaposition of many varied tones enclosed within straight and diagonal lines. A work like this shows his willingness to experiment with different themes and styles and may also reveal his sense of humour.
