In 1945 he won a scholarship to the Slade in London, but shortly afterwards was called up for National Service. Upon demobilisation in 1948, he decided to turn down the offer of study in London in order to remain close to his then chief source of inspiration: the Gloucestershire countryside. The present view is of the rocky cliffs and islets at the western extremity of Swansea Bay, Wales.

  • This striking self portrait is a study for a larger oil portrait titled Self Portrait in Aran Clothes, which was exhibited in the 1989 Keating retrospective held at the RHA (catalogue no. 89, collection of Mrs Hanbury) and illustrated in colour in the catalogue to that exhibition. In both works Keating adopts the homespun cloth hat and jerkin worn by Aran Island men. Former Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, the late James White, once commented on the physical similarities Keating shared with the Aran men, describing Keating as “blackhaired and bearded with a menacing eye by times” (introductory essay to the 1989 retrospective). Keating also included himself in a number of his large-scale compositions wearing these same clothes; see for instance Half Flood, illustrated in Twelve Irish Artists (Waddington Publications, 1940).

  • Provenance: Neptune Gallery, Dublin; Private collection, Surrey
  • Exhibited: 'Mainie Jellett Exhibition', IMMA, Dublin, December 1991 - March 1992, catalogue no. 15 (as Girl in Hat)
  • Literature: Bruce Arnold, Mainie Jellett and the Modern Movement in Ireland, Yale University Press, New Haven & London, 1991, pp.25-26, illustrated plate 31, p.26; Mainie Jellett 1897-1944, IMMA, Dublin, illustrated p.53
  • In the catalogue to the Jellett retrospective held at IMMA in 1991, Bruce Arnold wrote of this work: “Like her oil paintings of this period, Jellett’s watercolours are very sparsely painted. She makes use of the dark bookshelves at the back to delineate the figure, which is indicated by pale brush strokes, the main emphasis being given to the face”. Both this work and the following were painted under Sickert’s influence, whilst Jellet was a student at the Westminster School of Art in London.

AN ARTIST AT HER EASEL IN THE LIFE ROOM AT THE WESTMINSTER SCHOOL OF ART
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 27 April 2004 / 28

Published Estimate: €3,000-4,000

Price Realised: €4000

  • Signature: signed and dated [1918] lower right
  • Medium: watercolour over pencil
  • Dimensions: 23 by 18cm., 9 by 7in.
  • Provenance: Neptune Gallery, Dublin; Private collection, Surrey
  • Painted whilst Jellett was studying under Sickert in London. The distinctive curved arch and “sombre grey painted brick walls”1 reveal the work to have painted in the life room at the Westminster School of Art, where students drew and painted from live models, as opposed to plaster casts. Jellett famously described her period of study with Sickert as “the first revolution” in her progress as a painter, learning from him a free and notably Impressionist manner of drawing and painting, as can be seen in the present pair of works. 1 Bruce Arnold, Mainie Jellett and the Modern Movement in Ireland, op. cit, p.25.

  • Signature: signed and dated [1937] lower right; inscribed on reverse
  • Medium: gouache on board
  • Dimensions: 30 by 19cm., 12 by 7.5in.
  • Exhibited: 'Exhibition of Pictures by Mainie H. Jellett', 7 St. Stephen's Green, Dublin, 9-22 November 1939, catalogue no. 14 (£8-8-0)
  • In 1935 Jellett visited the International Exhibition of Chinese Art at Burlington House in London, with the express purpose of studying oriental art. The stylised, calligraphic treatment of landscape in Chinese art appealed to Jellett, who saw it as a means of escaping what she believed to be the inherent materialism of naturalistic painting. By 1937 she had fully absorbed the lessons learnt at the Chinese exhibition and incorporated them into her work. Her solo exhibition that year was composed almost entirely of figurative works and landscapes – a change from her former preoccupation with abstraction. At least two other paintings of waterfalls date from this period (Waterfall in Winter, Dublin Painters’ Exhibition, 1939, catalogue no. 41, and Waterfall, IMMA, 1991, catalogue no. 124), and each shares the same decorative patterns of swirling and bubbling water that are seen in the present work.

AUTUMN DAY AT ISLAND-BRIDGE, DUBLIN
AUTUMN DAY AT ISLAND-BRIDGE, DUBLIN
Harry Kernoff RHA (1900-1974)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 27 April 2004 / 34

  • Signature: signed and dated [1934] lower right; inscribed with title on reverse
  • Medium: oil on panel
  • Dimensions: 61 by 91cm., 24 by 36in.
  • The perspective of this ‘urban-scape’ is from the perimeter road within the Phoenix Park, about mid-point between the Wellington Monument and the Magazine Fort. One imagines Kernoff pitching his easel on the grassy knoll above the park bench occupied by the man reading his paper – the bench is still there, as is a surprising amount of this period vista of Kilmainham in the 1930s. Park Terrace, whose upper storeys of three Victorian houses we can see below the road level, foreground, is intact. So are most of the buildings on the right of the picture, climbing up the hill towards the chocolate factory, then owned by Rowntree Macintosh and seen here in the distance with a blue roof and stack chimneys. Top of centre left, as a marker, is the castellated tower of the Royal Hospital rear entrance (the tower formerly stood at the foot of the Watling Street Bridge on the Liffey Quays, but was re-located stone by stone to Kilmainham in the mid-1840s) . The blob of smoke below the tower is a railway engine going into Kingsbridge Station (later re-named Heuston Station), which served the south of the country. Below that again is the gable end of the red buildings belonging to Clancy Army Barracks, which are currently being developed as apartments, as happened during the 1990s with much of the view to the lower left. Kernoff uses people to put his very human scale upon his wider view. There is a touch of Lowry’s ‘match-stick’ men and women about the way he uses them to inhabit the landscape. The man in the cloth cap and raincoat going by the storm-blasted tree and the couple looking down on the sweep of road are all done in muted greys and browns that suggests a city in hibernation, awaiting the reviving touch of spring. Kernoff painted other views of Islandbridge and Kilmainham in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s. Related works appeared at the RHA annual exhibitions, such as An Autumn Avenue, Phoenix Park (1926), Silver Birches, Autumn - Phoenix Park (1937), and Suburbia – Kilmainham, Dublin (1940). An early 1902 century view of this tower in its original site was sold in these rooms on 18 November 2003 (lot 116). Kevin O’Connor, Dublin, March 2004

  • This picture was painted in the summer of 1953 at the artist’s house, in Derrahowna townland, Errisbeg, Roundstone, Connemara. The weather had been particularly good for several weeks, and the artist had gone out to paint a very large canvas, accompanied by his friend, and his future assistant, the painter Desmond Stephenson (1922-1963). Stephenson, known to us as Steve, was a close family friend, and shared many of the same literary and musical tastes of my parents. The canvas which Mac had painted, being unusually large, had to be carried home separately, with Steve bringing up the rear carrying the painting box, mahl stick and the very large palette. On this occasion, Steve had stopped off for some refreshments, arriving home a good deal later, just as an enormous, and long threatened thunder and lightening storm broke directly overhead. I remember my father sitting to paint the view from the hall over Mary King’s field (she was a neighbour from Errelough) and when Steve appeared in the hall my father said in his very flat way.."Ah! home is the hero"...then he made him stand there posing whilst he repainted this picture. Steve was very striking looking, with a broad beard, and at that time almost always wore a black Spanish hat and moleskin trousers. The painting had been somewhat larger, but eventually my father cut it down in size. The palette which was a studio palette and not really suitable for outdoor work, had been Orpen’s, passed to our family friend James Sleator and after his death to my father. (See Bruce Arnold, Mirror to an Age, pp. 404, 421, 428). The palette was highly varnished through regular use, and was always wiped off every evening with linseed oil. It, together with some of his best brushes (from the Old Chenil Gallery, Chelsea) were buried on top of his coffin at Gorteen graveyard in Connemara in January 1979. The palette was large and beautifully balanced, making it very easy to hold for long periods. The mahl stick which still survives was used as a prop when painting large canvases. Published Estimate: €15,000-20,000

  • Signature: signed lower left
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 38 by 51cm., 15 by 20in.
  • This airy and idyllic landscape differs somewhat from Craig’s usual treatment of beach scenes. Gone are the busy holiday crowds in their bathing suits and sunhats. Here, an atmosphere of calmness and solitude surrounds the figure of the woman in the foreground reading her book, oblivious of the two young girls at play on the sand. In both atmosphere and palette, the work compares favourably to Frank McKelvey’s The Strand, Marble Hill, Co Donegal of 1927, illustrated on the dust-jacket of S. B. Kennedy’s monograph on McKelvey. Craig painted at least one other work on this same stretch of sand, sold through the Pym’s Gallery, London, May – June 1982, as Bathers on the Fairy Strand, Donegal (catalogue no. 13).
