  • Literature: Declan Mallon, Nano Reid, Sunnyside Publications, Drogheda, 1994, illustrated on p.82
  • Nano Reid believed passionately in the preservation of Ireland’s - and particularly the Boyne Valley’s – cultural and historical monuments. Old Town Walls depicts at its centre the 13th century St. Lawrence’s Gate (incorrectly identified as St. John’s Gate on reverse), with Millmount, a twelth century Norman motte at top left, overlooking the town of Drogheda. At the time it was painted, only two of the original four gates in the town’s medieval south wall remained: St Lawrence’s Gate and the Butter Gate. This latter was shortly afterwards dismantled by the town’s authorities, who believed it to be in such a state of disrepair as to represent a public danger. However, the building was not destroyed without provoking a storm of protest from Reid, who on the 26th July 1958 wrote to the editor of the Drogheda Independent, railing against the proposed demolition and suggesting a subsription be raised for its repair. Ending on a grimly pessimistic note, she questioned whether the townspeople appreciated their local antiquities, quoting a “remark overheard a few days ago: ‘What was it only a heap of rubble’. Let’s hope not”. Declan Mallon cites this letter and records: “The incident caused Nano to continually rail against the authorities so much so that Gerard Dillon in inimical style, christened her ‘Butter Gate Reid’” (op. cit., p.83). With a copy of the Taylor Gallery catalogue on reverse.

He has since had numerous solo shows, particularly with the Kerlin Gallery and Hallward Gallery, Dublin, and the Federensky Gallery, Belfast, whilst his work is in many important collections including the Ulster Museum, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Arts Council of Great Britain, IMMA, AIB, and European Parliament, Brussels.

ORCHARD
Basil Blackshaw RHA RUA (b.1932)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 17 February 2004 / 41

Published Estimate: €15,000-20,000

Price Realised: €21000

  • Signature: signed and dated [1956] lower right
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 36 by 61cm., 14 by 24in.
  • Provenance: Collection of Tom Carr HRHA HRUA ARWS (1909-1999); Private collection, Co. Donegal
  • Exhibited: 'Basil Blackshaw Retrospective', Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Belfast, 1974, catalogue no. 16 (loaned by Tom Carr, illustrated in catalogue)
  • Blackshaw’s work of the 1950s is typically expressionist in treatment, with dark tones lending an air of tension to scenes which might otherwise have been treated conventionally and prettily. Orchard is one of a series of landscapes from this decade that were all painted around his parents’ farm at Boardmills, near Ballynahinch, Co. Down. It is viewed from the same low vantage point as was used in The Field, 1953 (Ulster Museum), with the dry grass stubble sweeping directly up the picture plane, flattening and abstracting the composition. In a written appreciation of the artist’s work printed at the front of the 1974 retrospective catalogue, Mercy Hunter commented on the significance of Blackshaw’s early landscapes of the 1950s: “Rejecting the tamer traditions of topographical landscape, his work up to about 1957 was strong and expressionistic and few Ulster painters have shown with such intensity the rich density of earth and heavy luminosity of the Northern sky”.

Auction Date / Lot No.: 17 February 2004 / 43

Published Estimate: €3,000-4,000

Price Realised: €3400

  • Medium: oil on canvas laid on board
  • Dimensions: 43 by 29cm., 17 by 11.5in.
  • Painted in the early 1940s, Abandoned Houses relates directly both to Enchanted Village, 1941 (AIB Collection) and Kinsale, 1941 (Whyte’s, 17 September 2002, Lot 149). All three works depict the gable ends of a row of buildings - in the present case with a roofless house, open to the elements, foremost in the row. Each work exudes an air of mysterious solitude, the buildings a testament to their owners’ collective absence. As in Kinsale, the present work employs a sharply exaggerated upwards perspective, as though viewed from the bottom of a steep hill. Enchanted Village combines such a perspective with an intitial ‘down-hill’ view, the resulting image zig-zagging down, then up and side to side, as the eye travels upwards to the distant horizon. As a series they mark Hennessy’s return to Ireland in 1939, where - dividing his time between Dublin and Cork - he recorded a landscape still scarred by the troubles of the 1920s Irish Civil War, in an era of curent wartime stringencies.

  • Born in Co. Louth, Frances Kelly studied at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin. In 1932, upon becoming the first student to win the Henry Higgins travelling scholarship she went to Paris, studying there for three years under the cubist painter Léopold Survage (1879-1968) and attending various other schools there of drawing and painting. On her return to Dublin she exhibited with the Dublin Painters and at the Dawson Gallery, also contributing to the RHA and the Living Art exhibitions. She collaborated with Nano Reid (q.v.) on a series of wall frescoes depicting scenes of Irish labour, which were commissioned in the 1940s for the Four Provinces building in Harcourt Street (these have since sadly been destroyed by developers in 1988). In the mid-1940s she married the eminent Irish statesman, F. H. Boland (1904-1985), Ambassador to the UK in the 1950s and later the first permanent Irish representative to the UN. Kelly’s work has much in common with her slightly older contemporaries Caroline Scally, Joan Jameson and Harriet Kirkwood.
