  • Mabel Young was the student and second wife of Paul Henry RHA. Born on the Isle of Wight, she came to Dublin in 1914 to assist her sister, who was then housekeeper of the Shelbourne Hotel. The two sisters remained at the Shelbourne throughout the vicissitudes of the 1916 Rising and the ensuing Civil War, during which, according to Elizabeth Bowen, a bullet was fired into Mabel’s sitting room, narrowly missing her pet canary. In 1924, whilst on a holiday in Wicklow, she met Paul Henry and with his encouragement and advice began painting. Four years later she exhibited at the RHA, showing thirty-two works there over the following years. Other exhibitions were held at Combridge’s and in the Shelbourne, and she was included in the 1953 Contemporary Irish Art exhibition at Aberystwyth in Wales. Her style was often close to that of Henry’s, as evident in the present work.

ANNAMOE RIVER, COUNTY WICKLOW
ANNAMOE RIVER, COUNTY WICKLOW
Louis le Brocquy HRHA (b.1916)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 18 November 2003 / 12

Published Estimate: €6,000-8,000

Price Realised: €7700

  • Signature: signed and dated [1947] lower right; original exhibition and sales record labels on reverse
  • Medium: pen and ink with wash
  • Dimensions: 12 by 18cm., 4.75 by 7in.
  • Provenance: Collection of Howard Bliss (enlightened collector of many of le Brocquy’s British contemporaries, particularly Ivon Hitchens); T. D. D. Divine Esq.; Neptune Gallery, Dublin; Whence purchased by Harold Davis in July 1974; Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow; Private collection, Ireland
  • Painted during le Brocquy’s so-called traveller or tinker period of 1945-48, and in the same year as the record-making Travelling Woman with Newspaper, Annamoe River is a deceptively simple work which reveals many of the artist’s working methods of the time. The multi-facetted composition, struck through repeatedly with strong black diagonals, harks back to his work during the war years designing stained glass windows for Dublin public houses, whilst also referring to early twentieth century cubist experiments in surface manipulation. The muted colours, however, look forward to the severely limited palette of the ‘Grey period’ paintings which were to dominate le Brocquy’s oeuvre during the 1950s.

WOMAN IN BLUE
Stella Steyn (1907-1987)

  • Dimensions: 69 by 38cm., 27 by 15in.
  • Provenance: The artist’s family, from whom purchased by The Manor House Gallery, Cheltenham; thence private collection, Co. Tipperary.
  • Of Russian and German extraction, Stella Steyn was born in Dublin and educated at Alexandra College and the Metropolitan School of Art. She was an outstanding art student and her tutors recognised in her “a pupil of genius” (Belfast Observer, 15 June 1930). In 1926, in the company of her mother and fellow artist Hilda Roberts, she went to Paris to study at the Académie Scandinave and at La Grande Chaumière. There she met James Joyce, who later asked her to provide illustrations for Finnegan’s Wake. In 1931 she enrolled at the Bauhaus in Germany, then the most innovative art school in Europe. She was the only Irish artist to have studied there and its teachings convinced her to adhere to her avant-garde principals for the rest of her days. Whilst she exhibited rarely in Ireland after 1930, two recent retrospective exhibitions at the Gorry Gallery in 1995 and the Molesworth Gallery in 2001 have done much to renew interest in her work.

SMITH AND PEARSON STEELWORKERS ON THE LIFFEY QUAYS, DUBLIN
SMITH AND PEARSON STEELWORKERS ON THE LIFFEY QUAYS, DUBLIN
Fergus O'Ryan RHA ANCA (1911-1989)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 18 November 2003 / 25

Published Estimate: €3,500-4,500

Price Realised: €4200

  • Signature: signed lower right
  • Medium: oil on board
  • Dimensions: 57 by 72cm., 22.5 by 28.5in.
  • While the landscape tradition in Irish painting is quite strong, pictures of architecture, towns and industrial activity are on the whole quite unusual. Even in Fergus O’Ryans work, which is mainly focused on landscape and townscape, industrial subjects are rare. This view of the Liffeyside area of Guinness’s brewery in Dublin is all the more interesting because it shows a range of sheds probably for racking or cooperage, under construction. Through the haze of steam and smoke we see the steel structures of a large range of sheds, with the name of the fabricator and contractor, Smith and Pearson, proudly displayed. This firm originated in Ship Street behind Dublin Castle, with Thomas Pearson & Co. manufacturing wire and other steel goods later amalgamating with Smiths. By the early 20th century they were one of the leading structural steel companies in Dublin. The firm was wound up some 25 years ago. This quayside site was used by Guinness from 1870 up until 1960, to ferry barrels of Guinness from the Brewery down to larger ships at Custom House quay, from where they were exported. A Guinness barge may be seen in the foreground, along with a lorry which suggests a date between 1945 and 1960. Various malt houses with their steep roofs and a chimney can be seen in the background. O’Ryan’s somewhat naïve style of painting captures the busy industrial scene, in the decades just before road transport completely took over from slower means of moving goods. It seems possible that the painting could have been commissioned by Smith and Pearson to record what must have been a very important contract for the firm. Peter Pearson

  • Exhibited: ’Exhibition of Paintings of Kitty Wilmer O’Brien and T. G. Wilson’, Dublin Painters’ Gallery, 1951, catalogue no. 15 (£20-0-0)
  • Kitty Wilmer O’Brien was a well-known and respected exhibitor in Dublin art circles for over fifty years. She entered the RHA schools in 1926 and distinguished herself there by winning prizes for drawing and painting. In 1933 she won the coveted Taylor Scholarship, which enabled her to go to London to study at the Slade. Three years later she married surgeon Dr Brendan O’Brien, son of her former mentor, Dermod O’Brien PRHA. After a period spent abroad they settled in Dublin, at 65 Fitzwilliam Square, from where she submitted works to the Society of Dublin Painters, the RHA and the WCSI, of which she was President from 1962 to 1981. The view depicted in this painting is from the first floor drawing room of no. 65, from which can be glimpsed Jack Yeats’ home, across the square at no. 18. Other artists who lived on the square include Mainie Jellett at no. 36 and at no. 3 the surgeon-painter Thomas G. Wilson HRHA, whose works were exhibited alongside Wilmer O’Brien’s at the Dublin Painters’ Gallery on St Stephen’s Green. Spring, Fitzwilliam Square was used as the basis of an etching which Wilmer O’Brien used annually for the family Christmas card and which her children used to colour in year after year in the advent season. A preparatory sketch for the work is still in the O’Brien family collection.

  • Dimensions: 51 by 61cm., 20 by 24in.
  • Exhibited: RHA, Dublin, 1960, catalogue no. 40 (£40-0-0)
  • Letitia Hamilton was rather unusual for an artist-traveller in that she rarely used pencil or watercolour or any other light, easily transportable media, opting instead for the more cumbersome canvas and oil paint. She first visited Portugal in 1959 and works from this trip featured in her exhibition at the Dawson Gallery in April 1960, including eight landscapes painted in Nazaré. The present work depicts two women in the local folk costume of multi-layered petticoats with black head-scarves, whilst behind them can be seen the twin bell towers of the Santuário da Nossa Senhora de Nazaré.
