In a review of the exhibition ‘Seán McSweeney and Friends’ at the Boyle Arts Festival, 2001, Aidan Dunne observed that her pastel landscapes were often “charged with a sense of epiphany”. • One of three works McGuinness painted with this title, the first being shown at the Leicester Galleries in London in 1957, purchased for the Great Southern Hotels collection (Parknasilla) and included in a number of loan exhibitions including the 1968 retrospective at Trinity College Dublin. Another work by the same title was exhibited at the Museum and Art Gallery, Stranmallis, Belfast in 1959, on loan from the City of Cork. This third work seems to have been painted at a slightly later date but is a fine example of the decorative, flattened landscapes by which the artist made her reputation.

MIXED FLOWERS ON A BALCONY OVERLOOKING BOATS ON WATER
Father Jack P. Hanlon (1913-1968)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 29 April 2003 / 33

Published Estimate: €10,000-12,000

Price Realised:

  • Signature: signed and inscribed "Summer 1936" on reverse
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 44 by 41cm., 17.5 by 16in.
  • Provenance: Emer Gallery, Belfast
  • In this very early work of Hanlon’s we see the artist experimenting with composition, design and colour, all of which reveal his obvious delight in the subject matter. Hanlon was one of a number of Irish artists attracted to the decorative qualities of French modernism. He painted with a palette literally saturated with white and tended to leave areas of white ground exposed at the edges of objects, thereby giving a radiance to his works. During the 1930s Hanlon was taking regular painting holidays in France, where this work was most likely created. In Paris he worked for periods in the studios of André Lhote and other modern artists. By 1936 he had also begun to exhibit at the RHA, a practice he would soon abandon in favour of more progressive exhibiting societies such as the Dublin Painters group. It has been suggested that in his depictions of flowers and gardens, Hanlon leant towards joyous, vibrant colours in his liberation from the intellectual rigours of religious life.

THE ESTUARY, MALAHIDE
THE ESTUARY, MALAHIDE
Eva Henrietta Hamilton (1876-1960)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 29 April 2003 / 37

Published Estimate: €5,000-7,000

Price Realised: €5000

  • Signature: chalk inscription on original stretcher, of which a fragment has been retained
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 44 by 44cm., 17.5 by 17.5in.
  • Exhibited: Possibly exhibited as 'On the Malahide Shore', RHA, 1921, catalogue no. 106
  • The eldest of the famous Hamilton sisters of Hamwood, Dunboyne, Eva was educted at Alexandra College, Dublin and began exhibiting at the age of 22 with the WCSI. In 1904 she showed two portraits of her sisters at the RHA, at which institute she was to eventually exhibit 121 works in total. Three years later her younger sister Letitia enrolled at the Metropolitan School of Art, possibly to distract herself from the miseries of a failed romance, and Eva joined too, almost immediately. There Eva came heavily under Orpen’s influence, although the effect was lightened somewhat when she later went on to study under Henry Tonks at the Slade. Eva and Letitia travelled, painted and exhibited together most of their lives, with Eva’s work consisting mainly of landscapes and group portraits in which family members feature predominatly. Indeed, some of the happily engaged children seen in this work playing on the sands at Malahide may be her nieces and nephews.

Gerard Dillon (1916-1971)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 29 April 2003 / 39

Published Estimate: €4,000-6,000

Price Realised:

  • Signature: signed lower right; inscribed on reverse
  • Medium: monotype on reverse of cut-out book illustration
  • Dimensions: 22 by 30cm., 8.75 by 12in.
  • Dillon was a highly experimental artist, alternating between paint, brush and ink, collage, tapestry and etching as time and opportunity allowed. Less is known however, about his monotypes and his amusingly overdrawn - even bowdlerised - photographs. In this work we see both activities combined. The sheet of paper used is a photolithograph portrait of the King of Sweden. The technique was described by Dillon himself in an article in the May 1957 issue of The Artist. Taking a sheet of thick glass, Dillon explained, he would cover it with lino ink then lay upon it a sheet of paper (in this case the King of Sweden, face up, with the blank reverse side touching the ink), and draw his design in pencil. When the sheet was lifted, the indented lines of the pencil had picked up the lino ink, creating a ‘one-off’ print in mirror image to the drawing. (See James White, Gerard Dillon: An Illustrated Biography, Wolfhound Press, Dublin, 1994, pp. 72-74).

  • Painted in the late 1950s when according to Snoddy (p.138), Dillon’s garden wall collapsed; upon ordering materials with which to rebuild it, the artist found himself with a surplus of sand and thus set about using it in his artwork. James White records that Dillon wrote in a state of great excitement to him, concerning his experiments both in abstraction and the sand paintings, which he describes in great detail (see Gerard Dillon: An Illustrated Biography, Wolfhound Press, Dublin, 1994, pp. 77-78)
